Chapter Six

Michael rushed to Thea’s workshop room, found a seat toward the back in the mostly packed room, and then slumped in the chair. He’d never felt so pissed off at himself in all his life. He’d really fucked up. Ruined everything. But he didn’t have time to dwell on that because Thea knocked his socks off. He was so proud of her he could bust.

How devastated she’d seemed only minutes earlier, yet here she was, walking down the conference hallway with a confidence that was a sharp contrast to the defeated woman who’d sidled up to his piano that first night. Sure, she would have bounced back from losing that author on her own. The hot new clothes and the sexier haircut were his doing, but she would have acted the professional without him. That he’d helped her in any way thrilled him.

When was the last time he felt this burst of pleasure at someone else’s success? At a woman’s success who wasn’t related to him? One who, incidentally, was in direct competition with his company.

Never. Sure, he’d had girlfriends over the years. And bedmates. But they had been simple distractions, picked up for a time, then set aside when life took him in another direction.

Never once had he found a woman who made him want to give without receiving in return. Who made him happy just because she was happy. Who had him flushed with pride simply because she was turning heads and about to start showing everyone how very brilliant she was.

It nearly killed him to think that he’d hurt her. Damn it, he wasn’t going to rest until he made it right.

He tried to see around the crowd in front of him without catching her attention. She was speaking on a panel about new marketing strategies in publishing. Having spent part of last night going over some of the very innovative things she was doing at her company, he knew how perfect she was for this topic. Of course, he’d cautioned her about over-sharing her know-how; these people were her competitors, after all, but he understood the need to show herself as more than the downtrodden editor of a struggling publisher. It was time she made her competition sit up and take notice.

And speaking of asshole competitors, Chuckles sported a new leather jacket and a pipe as he sauntered up to the stage. There was no smoking in here, but he gestured around with it, probably because it made him look genial. Or editorial. Or some such ridiculous thing. Frankly, he looked like a pompous ass.

Michael was mulling over the best way to fire the idiot when his brother slid into the seat next to him.

“Where the hell have you been?” Jonathan asked. “I’ve been looking all over for you.”

Michael sighed. “Fucking up my life.”

“By carrying women caveman-style to the elevator?”

He felt his face heat. “You heard about that, huh?”

“Hard not to. So that her?” Jonathan asked as he gestured at Thea.

“Yeah. That’s her.” He hadn’t meant to put any emphasis on the word, but it had come out that way.
